A STEM Celebration at IMS

Posted by jpellman on April 7, 2014

May is the month when the Indianapolis Motor Speedway springs to life with “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indianapolis 500.

When the racing world converges on the track and our city, the fascination with auto racing ramps up as teams work to get as much speed and performance possible from their cars.  Auto racing is truly a great demonstration of the disciplines that are at the forefront of almost every education and workforce program in the country today; STEM – science, technology, engineering and math plays a pivotal role in designing, building, maintaining and driving the fastest race cars in the world.

It is only fitting that the IMS is the site for a celebration of STEM education in Indiana, as Purdue University, EmployIndy, Conexus Indiana and Dallara Indycar Factory team up to present the M-STEM3500.  The initiative was developed at Purdue to combine the ‘cool’ of motorsports with a career pull towards manufacturing and medicine to create M-STEM3:  Motorsports empowered STEM for Manufacturing and Medicine. The objective of M-STEM3 is to create in Indiana the world’s premier manufacturing workforce.

The M-STEM3500 will happen at IMS on Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Each day will begin with student-focused networking, an information and demonstration event featuring robotics, high school go-kart program, middle school downhill racers and more from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Beginning at 2 p.m., current job seekers may attend a career fair and networking event.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Organizations interested in participating may contact EmployIndy’s Business Solutions Representative, Lisa Metcalf at 317.684.2256 or lmetcalf(at)
